The role of the public library has changed dramatically in the last generation. Libraries are a community gateway to learning and information in all forms, including online.
Through e-Vermont the Vermont Department of Libraries advised e-Vermont staff and community members in strategies to take best advantage of the resources offered by libraries in the 21st century. As part of e-Vermont libraries have:
- Received a total of $96,000 for equipment and services.
- Increased public Internet access through:
- Improved their online resources, which are available 24 hours a day
- Hosted Internet Interns from the Vermont State College system, who are available each week to help patrons with their Internet questions (see Stories)
- Participated in the iConnect program to learn skills for working with Internet beginners, which will be used in continuing education for library staff and volunteers
- Provided access to materials designed to help beginners learn Internet basics
- Distributed 100 computers donated by Google for use in public libraries and adult education centers.
Vermont Department of Libraries staff provided support for all of the above programs. The Department of Libraries will is continuing its digital literacy and online access work with a major digital literacy initiative planned for launch in summer, 2012.
